The Hallway and Tourism and Events Queensland (TEQ) in partnership with Sunshine Coast Destination Ltd (SCDL), have launched an emotive new creative platform “Make the Most of the Moment”. Phase one of the integrated campaign will see three TVCs breaking nationally this week, across television and digital channels. During Phase two the campaign will be supported by PR and activation also managed by The Hallway.

The campaign taps into the ongoing issue around the “always on” culture, where we live in a society in which technology has seemingly always been synonymous with progress. But there is an increasing societal realisation that our reliance and in some ways even addiction to technology may in fact be having a negative impact on our lives, particularly in our social interactions. Smart phones are undoubtedly among the lead culprits, drawing us away from “real” interaction with our friends and family into an always-on “virtual” world that can become so important to us that we fear that we’ll miss out if we put the device down for too long.

The “Make the Most of the Moment” campaign will tackle this issue head on. Phase one of the campaign, encompassing 15” and 30” TV spots will serve as an invitation to “take yourself offline”, presenting the Sunshine Coast as a destination that allows us to be truly connected – to ourselves, to the people we love and to the world around us.

“But the TV ads are just the beginning” says Hallway Creative Partner Simon Lee, “ the next phase will see the Sunshine Coast physically enabling and encouraging the behaviours our advertising advocates.”

Lee continues “We created these spots to serve quite literally as a break within the usual commercial frenzy of an ad break. This mirrors the role that a holiday on the Sunshine Coast can play – a break from the frenzied pace of our modern “always on” lives. The choice of 15 second slots and the deliberate, meditative pace of our 15 second executions are in themselves a concrete expression of the campaign idea.”

Veronica Rainbird, marketing and brand director of SCDL, added: “This campaign invites visitors to ‘Make the Most of the Moment’ and reinforces the Sunshine Coast’s naturally refreshing brand. The exciting new campaign encapsulates and showcases the Sunshine Coast as the perfect place to enjoy quality time together and leave feeling naturally refreshed.”

The Hallway Creative Partner Simon Lee’s debut feature film Dream Racer has been awarded the Filmets Badalona Prize for Human Values and Sport at the 2013 Barcelona International Sports Film Festival.

Lee was unable to attend the award ceremony that took place at the Olympic museum of Sport in Barcelona on Saturday night, but is delighted with the accolade. “When I embarked on the Dream Racer project, I set out above all to tell a great human story. So to see the film celebrated for its human values in this way is extremely gratifying”.

The Festival programme included Eric Cantona’s Les Rebelles du Foot and Town of Runners, both of which were in the official selection at this year’s Tribecca Film Festival. Also in the competition, in Barcelona, was The Glue Society’s Matt Devine’s Panyee FC.

This award follows the success at The All Sports Film Festival in Los Angeles in November last year, where Dream Racer was awarded Best Foreign Feature Documentary.

Written, produced and directed by Simon Lee, Dream Racer is an inspiring account of the fear of life going by unfulfilled and the pursuit of dreams as the antidote to this fear. The film tells the extraordinary true story of French Australian Business Consultant Christophe Barriere Varju who defies extreme physical hardship and personal tragedy as he attempts to take on the world’s most dangerous motor race, the Dakar Rally, on a motorbike.

Following a huge year of commercial growth, The Hallway has hired a host of new talent in the first quarter of 2013.

Joining the independent advertising agency are creative team Dylan Soopramania & Steven Hey, senior copywriter Josh Aitken, PR Manager Mollie Whichello and Account Director, Costa Fillis.

These five new hires bring the team to 36, fuelled by organic growth on existing clients and new business wins, including Tourism Queensland and TV1 General Entertainment, announced last week.

Jules Hall, Managing Partner, said the growth spurt is not over: “it feels like we’ve been hiring non-stop for a year. And when I look around I realise we really have been welcoming clever and creative people for months. And we’re still hiring. It’s satisfying building this talented team, even if it means we’re constantly building new desks.”

Soopramania and Hey join The Hallway from Sapient Nitro, and have rare integrated credentials from time spent at DDB, Naked and Momentum in Sydney.

Josh Aitken has worked at several Sydney agencies including six years at Draftfcb, and will be teamed with Head of Art, Dave Lidster.

Costa Fillis brings years of big brand experience to the agency and his InsuranceLine client, with long tenures at Human, DDB and GPY&R.

And fresh from sunny London, Mollie Whichello joins the agency’s burgeoning PR division, working with Louise Pogmore who joined the agency from Naked, in January.

Following a competitive pitch, TV1 General Entertainment Partnership has appointed independent advertising agency The Hallway to review their digital revenue model across their subscription television channel brands, TV1 and SF.

The Hallway will undertake a rigorous strategic and business consultancy project in order to investigate and identify new digital income streams for both brands.

Peter Hudson, CEO of TV1 and SF, said: “It’s a dynamic time for subscription television channels, so we need to be strategic in identifying potential digital revenue streams outside of the box. Therefore, we need an agency partner that has both the business and creative intelligence to work with us. The Hallway’s strategic and business approach to our digital challenge is a perfect fit.”

Jules Hall, managing partner at The Hallway, added: “We’re excited to be appointed by TV1 to review their digital revenue drivers and help them further build the brand presence of two leading content properties in Australia.”

TV1 and SF channels are available on Foxtel. The TV1 General Entertainment Partnership is jointly owned by Sony Pictures Television, CBS Studios International and NBC Universal.

The Hallway’s Creative Partner Simon Lee’s debut feature film Dream Racer has been picked up for international distribution by UK based Brightside Films who will begin representing the film at MIPDOC in Cannes next month.

Simon Lee, creative partner at The Hallway, said: “We’ve had a number of offers from distributors here in Australia, in Europe and the USA, but Brightside’s boutique approach and genuine passion for the project make them ideal distribution partners for Dream Racer.”

Brightside Films was started in 2010 by Sally Kenchington – ex Director of Acquisitions and Commissioning Editor for factual programmes at the UK’s Channel 5. The company has a strong track record in sales of documentary programming to networks throughout the world.

Sally Kenchington, managing director at Brightside Films, said: “Dream Racer is a rare accomplishment in documentary film, it succeeds in combining true cinematic scale with the gritty realism one expects from the documentary genre. We already have a lot of interest in the lead up to Cannes.”

Brightside’s appointment follows independently negotiated sales to South Africa’s Super Sports TV network and In Flight-Entertainment sales to Qantas, Emirates and Virgin Australia.

This commercial success comes off the back of festival selections in Innsbruck, Austria and The All Sports Film Festival in Los Angeles where Dream Racer was awarded Best Foreign Feature Documentary.

Single-handedly written, produced and directed by Simon Lee, Dream Racer tells the extraordinary true story of French Australian business Consultant Christophe Barriere Varju’s attempt to take on the world’s most dangerous motor race, the Dakar Rally. But beyond just the story of a race, it’s an inspiring account of the fear of life going by unfulfilled and the pursuit of dreams as the antidote to this fear. Mitchell Block, Producer of Academy Award winning documentary Big Mama praised Dream Racer as “a compelling, moving and powerful film”.

Louise Pogmore, The Hallway’s Head of PR, has today been shortlisted for PR Leader of the Year. The award recognises those leaders who have made a “significant contribution to the industry over a number of years, consistently inspiring others and representing the industry in a positive light”.

Joining The Hallway in January 2013, working with clients such as Tourism Queensland, InsuranceLine, Frucor and Australian Frontline Machinery, Louise is already growing her team. The PR capability is embedded into The Hallway, not operating as a separate brand or sister agency; allowing PR to seamlessly tap into and complement the brand, advertising, content and technology resources of the wider agency.

Louise has extensive PR experience spanning over 14 years and has developed award-winning campaigns at leading agencies including Porter Novelli, Edelman and Hill & Knowlton. Most recently, she played a pivotal role in developing the PR offer at Naked communications.

CommsCon 2013 is a new initiative from Focal Attractions and the Communications Council.
